Two More California Districts Add MimioClassroom Interactive Teaching Technologies To Boost Student Engagement And Teacher-Led Instruction Thousands Of Southern California Students Experiencing A Better Way To Learn
Oct 31st 2012, 14:19

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Oct. 29, 2012 – More Southern California schools and districts are making Mimio Interactive Teaching Technologies a standard component in creating first-rate learning environments, facilitating differentiated instruction and preparing students to successfully meet the challenges of excelling in the 21st century workplace. During the month of September alone, more than 70 classrooms at Home Gardens Academy and Cesar Chavez Academy in Corona-Norco Unified School District (USD) as well as Mission Hills Elementary and Cypress School of the Arts in Hesperia USD incorporated Mimio products into their teaching practices.

With the addition of the institutions cited above, a total of 34 private schools and 26 districts across the region, including Los Angeles Unified School District (USD), San Diego USD, Orange USD, Etiwanda USD, and Murietta Valley USD, have committed to teaching with Mimio.

Mimio was born by way of some very creative thinkers at MIT, in 1997, who were dedicated to making learning more engaging for students with technology that enabled teachers to do what they do best, teach. As Mimio has grown, numerous breakthrough innovations have emerged through the collaboration between world-class engineers and top educators looking to set significant new standards for the industry.

"We are passionate about two things – helping teachers truly engage today's 'iGeneration' students and helping students excel. Our passion comes to life by delivering the best interactive learning environments in each and every academic classroom, be it language arts, math, science or history," said Manny Perez, Mimio's General Manager. "What we are witnessing with the rapid adoption of Mimio products across Southern California and around the state is that K-12 administrators and teachers are committed to reaching students with tools and resources that are both relevant and motivating."

As a global leader in developing interactive teaching technologies and instructional software, MimioClassroom products include the MimioTeach™ interactive whiteboard, which converts any dry erase board into a fully-interactive whiteboard; MimioVote™ assessment; MimioView™ document camera; MimioPad™ wireless pen tablet; and MimioCapture™ ink recorder. Each MimioTeach comes pre-packaged with the award-winning MimioStudio™ classroom software, which is compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems, and is available in 33 languages, so teachers around the world can generate localized activities. In addition, Mimio also recently launched MimioReading™ software suite that provides schools with one-of-a-kind supplemental reading programs for individual, group and full classroom instruction.

Educators at Cole Canyon Elementary School in Murietta Valley USD initiated a pilot program with the MimioTeach interactive whiteboard last year after Principal Mike Marble recognized that the technologies students enjoy outside school make it more difficult to capture their attention with conventional teaching tools like textbooks and overhead projectors.

"Cole Canyon teachers do an excellent job in helping out students excel academically. Yet, teaching today has to be more hands-on, integrated and thematic instead of worksheet and drill-oriented," said Marble. "This solution has given our teachers a way to step out of the traditional role of just 'instructing' and into one where they are facilitators to the learning process and students are active participants."

California educators aren't alone in embracing the use of interactive teaching technologies in the classroom. In a report, "K-12 Tech Tools and Trend 2012, publishing forecast firm Simba Information revealed that interactive whiteboards are used in nearly 30 percent of K-12 classroom for at least 5.1 hours a day. The publisher also noted that interactive whiteboards have the most penetration of any recent tech device, with an average usage of more than 70 percent in all major subject areas in elementary schools.

"I regularly use technology as a motivational tool, as a way to differentiate and quickly and accurately assess students' understanding of the standards, and to hold each student accountable for their own learning," said Angela Helmer, third-grade teacher, Todd Elementary in Corona-Norco USD. "I have students completing touch-screen monitor computer-based learning activities, other are dancing their way through their learning on a dance mat, while others are at the front of the room using the Mimio interactive whiteboard with the interactive pen to work on a kinesthetically-based vocabulary lesson."

For Nancy Jones, a second-grade teacher at Todd Elementary, the power comes from MimioVotes. "The responders have been so easy to use and have really kept the kids engaged in the learning process. I love having the instant feedback of their understanding of the concept taught because it allows me to move on or to clarify any confusion. The students even discuss why a student may have picked an incorrect answer."

Cole Canyon third-grade teacher Anne Hess added, "I believe I'm a better teacher since adding MimioTeach to my classroom. The possibilities for making my lesson more creative and engaging are absolutely limitless, and this interactive technology has made me feel more connected to my students. The very morning it arrived, I literally pulled it out of the box, plugged it into my computer and projector, and I was ready to start teaching."

Perez added, "These educators, like so many of their peers around the country, use the MimioClassroom comprehensive suite because it has an outstanding reputation for offering quality, easy-to-use products supported by terrific professional development tools. These interactive teaching technologies are helping students across all grades and subjects build the skills necessary to succeed in today's knowledge-based, technology-enabled society."

'VOTES' Students Sharply Divided on Iran and Energy Policy, Find Common Ground on Money in Politics – And First Two Debates
Oct 31st 2012, 14:15

SONOMA, Calif. and NORTHFIELD, Mass. (October 29, 2012) – Just like the candidates battling for the White House, some of the nation's best and brightest secondary students hold sharply opposing views on a number of the most contentious issues in this year's campaign.

Especially if those issues have to do with energy.

That's one of the key findings of a new series of Blast polls in this year's national VOTES Project (Voting Opportunities for Teenagers in Every State), an initiative spearheaded by Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH), a prestigious private school in Massachusetts, and StudySync (www.studysync.com), the web-based Common Core curriculum from BookheadEd Learning, LLC.

The only program of its kind in the country, the VOTES Project brings together more than 100 public and private schools nationwide, as well as schools internationally, to give students a voice in the 2012 election. The most recent VOTES Project Blast polls, conducted throughout October, asked students to weigh in on hot topics in domestic and foreign policy. Blasts are short reading and writing assignments, using StudySync technology, that address timely, high-interest topics of cultural significance.

In perhaps the thorniest question of the campaign season, students were asked the best approach to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons technology. A majority – 56.5 percent – expressed support for "position(ing) American military equipment and personnel in the region to demonstrate a willingness to strike if Iran does not cease its nuclear weapons program," while 43.5 percent agreed that the U.S. should "continue to apply sanctions through the United Nations and follow the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

Some 637 students nationwide responded to the first question, generating 5,827 peer reviews – that is, student comments and feedback from within the VOTES Project/StudySync community. The most popular post came from this high school student in Northfield, Mass.: "The U.S. should observe what Iran is doing, and apply these sanctions, but also be ready to enforce these sanctions with a line in the sand." And a middle school student in Kaysville, Utah, offered this: "I do not think that we should threaten them with military, because if they do have weapons it could make them feel inclined to use them."

Students were even more divided on the matter of the Keystone Pipeline and U.S. energy policy overall. By the narrowest of margins – 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent – VOTES students endorsed construction of the Keystone Pipeline across the U.S. midsection.

On the Keystone question, 498 students responded, generating 4,396 peer review comments. Among those posts was this from a Northfield, Mass. high schooler: "More oil creates jobs, but it is bad for the environment. Renewable energy also creates jobs. Consider factors that will affect the future." A middle school student was even more emphatic: "We should go completely green, thereby reducing pollution and global warming, while helping the economy. It’s win-win!"

Taking On the Campaign Itself If students split on matters of oil and nukes, they were united – largely in opposition – to the Citizens United court ruling and the expansive role of money in politics. When asked, "Should corporations, unions, and Super PACs be permitted to spend as much money as they want to support or oppose political candidates?" nearly three quarters of the 684 students polled – 73.4 percent – said no. Among the 5,349 peer review comments, this one, from a high school student in Brenham, Texas, was rated highest: "Not everyone has the same buying power, so each political party should be given the same amount of money to use. It’s only fair." And a student in Hoover, Alabama, posted this: "I think it is outrageous. I get it, the rich endorse the politicians so they kind of owe them, but the less fortunate still need a voice."

Student opinion of the first two presidential debates was in sync with the conventional wisdom and the verdict of most of the mainstream media, with 67.5 percent giving the October 3 debate to Mitt Romney and 61.5 percent judging President Obama the winner of the October 16 encounter. Of the first debate, a Northfield high school student offered this: "President Obama did not articulate his words well enough to convince the opposing sides. Mitt Romney gave a very good argument." And in response to the second face-off, a student in Kaysville, Utah, observed: "You never know what promises either of the candidates will keep. What things are promised has a huge pull on what your opinions are."

"From both the raw numbers and the insightful commentary, today's secondary school students are every bit as engaged in Campaign 2012 as their elders," said Jim Shea, NMH history teacher and VOTES co-founder. "As the VOTES Project progresses this season, we continue to be impressed by the level of understanding among students across the country — and by their eagerness to share their opinions on the issues and the electoral process itself."

"Educators strive to engage students with topics relevant to their lives," said Robert Romano, founder and CEO, BookheadEd Learning. "StudySync’s Blasts provide an immediate connection by delivering current events in a meaningful and interactive way. We're especially pleased with the response the Blast polls have provided with the VOTES Project in classrooms across the nation, giving students the opportunity to participate in this important national conversation."

NMH created VOTES 1988 and has run the program for all six presidential elections since then. In 2008, 60,000 students from every state in the nation cast ballots of their own and sent them to Northfield Mount Hermon a week before Election Day. For the 2012 race, the polls will wrap up just prior to Election Day, when students will select one of the two candidates.

In addition to counting the popular vote, NMH’s mock election simulates the Electoral College process. According to NMH, teen voters have correctly predicted the results of the national presidential election in every race since 1988, with the exception of the 2004 contest. Turnout in participating schools approaches 80 percent — twice the average turnout in national elections. The project teaches students about the democratic process, tests their political savvy, and reveals the age group’s political leanings through an issues poll. An innovative, web‐delivered academic tool, StudySync was created by leading national educators with the goal of inspiring higher levels of critical thinking and academic collaboration. Aligned to the Common Core State Standards, StudySync targets middle and high school students, enlisting broadcast-quality video, digital media, mobile platforms and social learning to advance students' reading, writing and critical thinking abilities. Flexible and easy‐to‐navigate, StudySync places control fully in the hands of the educator, enabling teachers to integrate the product into their current classroom curriculum any way they see fit. StudySync is also intended to be used across disciplines – for language arts classrooms and for science, social studies, history and other subject areas as well.

About BookheadEd Learning, LLC BookheadEd Learning connects high school and middle school students to the great ideas of mankind through technology, multimedia, and a rich library of classic and modern texts. A Pedagogical Breakthrough in School Mathematics Education
Oct 31st 2012, 14:11

Dalin Inc. announces the launch of its high school mathematics visual-dynamic-quantitative exploration software and its online graphical video lessons for teaching and learning school mathematics. These resources, that harness technology for pedagogical purposes, represent a pedagogical breakthrough in school mathematics education. The Dalin Inc. pedagogical approach is to teach and learn school mathematics through visualization, which is essential for human beings to KNOW the meaning of any object or term (“a picture is worth a thousand words”), and through exploration, which is essential to UNDERSTAND mathematical objects, properties and characteristics. This is the HUMAN PEDAGOGY according to which people learn to know and understand their world from early childhood and onward. Dalin’s products enable to overcome the obstacles to understanding school mathematics by translating the symbolic mathematics language into visual representations and by providing the necessary tools to explore those visual representations. Such exploration leads to discovery and to understanding of school mathematics theorems and concepts, while satisfying students' natural curiosity. Dalin’s software and graphical lessons enhance the implementation of a pedagogical revolution in school mathematics education, which will lead to accumulation of knowledge, understanding, success as well as a significant decrease in the rate of dropout. They also significantly improve the teaching and learning of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, or any other High School mathematics curriculum. The proposed software products were approved as met the social content standards required by the California Board of Education. Therefore, districts may purchase them using either Proposition 20 Lottery Funds or general funds.

Dalin Inc. high school software and lessons are available for FREE trial, review and evaluation until December 31, 2012 . Please visit the website: www.novomath.com.

Happy Halloween, folks. As a treat for you, we're premiering Lily and the Parlour Tricks' creepy new video for "Murder Song," a slice of throwback girl-group pop that's based on a horrific true crime.

"I read a book called True Crime: An American Anthology, put together by the author Harold Schechter. They are short pieces, some of them essays by writers like Truman Capote and others case studies, trial documents and news articles related to any number of American murders; some famous, some not," singer Lily Claire tells Spinner. "There is an article from an 18th-century New York newspaper, about a man who heard voices in his head telling him to 'kill his idols,' so he threw his bible in the fire and murdered his entire family. He ran to his sister's neighboring farm and she asked what was wrong and he said, 'I've done something horrible: I threw the bible away.' I couldn't get over the whole thing, both the story itself and the graphically blunt way in which it was written. I wanted the song to be story-telling in the same way."

Daggett: Schools must teach thinking skills
Oct 31st 2012, 13:12

“Our schools aren’t failing,” Daggett said. “The problem is that in the world outside, schools are changing faster than ours.”

The institution entrusted with preparing citizens for a rapidly changing world has been one of the most resistant to innovation, a well-respected education expert said Oct. 30.

Bill Daggett told an audience of almost 1,000 people at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo, Miss., that America’s schools are still doing many of the same things they did nearly 100 years ago for no reason other than tradition.

Those schools are educating students better today than they ever have, said Daggett, an internationally recognized leader in the field. The problem is the world is changing much more quickly—and American students are entering school much less prepared.

“Our schools aren’t failing,” he said during the Forum on the Future of Education. “The problem is that in the world outside, schools are changing faster than ours.”

The forum was funded by CREATE Foundation’s Toyota Education Enhancement Fund. It was intended to help an audience of Northeast Mississippi educators, parents, and community leaders better understand changes that are coming.

Beyond ‘Superman’: Leading Responsible School Reform

“Innovation will really be the secret for where we need to go for our children’s education,” said Mississippi Interim Superintendent of Education Lynn House, who also spoke at the forum.

Schools must be more open to technology, Daggett said, noting new inventions such as more powerful internet search engines, watches and eyeglasses with internet capabilities, and automated cars—innovations that are all available today.

“We are preparing kids for a world you can hardly comprehend,” he said.

Schools must have higher standards, use real-world applications, and teach students to think rather than memorize, he said. Those are the changes that the Common Core State Standards seek to address, he said.

N.Y. teacher rallies against state tests, says math is too difficult
Oct 31st 2012, 13:44

William Gotsch, a fourth-grade teacher at Madrid-Waddington Central School in Madrid, N.Y., is urging the state to revisit its new education standards, after determining that the common core sample math question on the Education Department's website are too difficult for fourth graders, the Watertown Daily Times reports. New York is one of 46 states and the District of Columbia to adopt the Common Core State Standards, a set of national guidelines aimed at teaching a narrower spectrum of subjects but in greater depth. The standards also require teaching some concepts in earlier grades than they were previously taught — a stipulation that has proved challenging for teachers transitioning to the Common Core. According to Gotsch, fourth graders will be expected to form algebraic equations from multi-step problems and calculate geometric angles at a level "too high for fourth-graders to complete," the Watertown Daily Times reports.

"I had an advanced eighth-grade student take the test. The student could not get through the first two questions," Gotsch told the paper…
